Why great facilitation beats great presenting

5 min read

Presenting delivers information. Facilitation changes behaviour.

Presenting delivers information. Facilitation changes behaviour. Most leadership offsites are built as a series of presentations, and then everyone wonders why Monday looks exactly like last Friday.

People commit to what they help create. When a team works through a real problem together — mapping a customer complaint, redesigning a handover, agreeing who decides what — they own the answer in a way no slide deck can produce.

Good facilitation is not the absence of structure; it is a lot of structure that the group barely notices. Clear questions, tight timeboxes, deliberate grouping and a visible record of decisions do most of the work.

If you have a two-hour slot, try this split: twenty minutes of input, eighty minutes of structured work and twenty minutes of commitments. You will be surprised how much more sticks.
