Why teams resist change

5 min read

Teams don't resist change. They resist confusion, loss and being left out.

Teams don't resist change. They resist confusion, loss and being left out of the conversation. Label people 'resistant' and you stop listening to what they are telling you.

Confusion is the easiest to fix: explain what is changing, why, and what it means for each role, in plain language and more than once.

Loss is harder. Even good change takes something away — a familiar routine, a status, a relationship. Acknowledge it out loud. People move faster once their loss has been named.

Inclusion is the multiplier. Invite the people closest to the work to shape how the change happens, even when the 'what' is fixed. Ownership turns critics into champions.
